ICFRE-BRC Aizawl Launches Comprehensive Green Skills Training Program
In a significant move towards promoting sustainable environmental practices, the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education-Bamboo & Rattan Centre (ICFRE-BRC) in Aizawl inaugurated a comprehensive two-day green skills training programme on Thursday. Titled 'Introduction to Composting and Apiculture', this initiative is being conducted under the Van Vigyan Kendra framework and aims to equip participants with practical knowledge for establishing their own eco-friendly units.
Training Programme Details and Participants
The training programme has attracted 20 enthusiastic participants from the Bethlehem Vengthlang locality of Aizawl. It features a blend of technical sessions and hands-on practical demonstrations designed to impart essential skills in composting and beekeeping. The curriculum is structured to provide participants with the necessary expertise to launch and manage their own sustainable ventures, thereby fostering local economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Inaugural Session Highlights and Key Addresses
The session commenced with a warm welcome address by Sandeep Yadav, scientist-D and head of ICFRE-BRC, who provided a detailed overview of the Centre's ongoing activities. Yadav emphasized the Centre's unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable livelihoods through scientific interventions and community engagement.
Joining the inaugural session via video conferencing, Nitin Kulkarni, director of the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI) in Jorhat, delivered the keynote address. Kulkarni highlighted the ecological synergy between waste management and agriculture, stressing the critical role of vermin-composting in promoting organic farming and maintaining long-term soil fertility. He also underscored the indispensable role of bees as pollinators and noted the high value of honey in the pharmaceutical industry, pointing to the economic potential of apiculture.
Government Support and Policy Integration
The chief guest, JH Lalbiakliana, chief executive officer of the Mizoram Khadi and Village Industries Board (MKVIB), elaborated on the board's extensive work in providing apiculture training across the state. Lalbiakliana emphasized that transitioning to scientific beekeeping practices is essential for maximizing yield and ensuring sustainability. He further revealed that apiculture is a key focus area under the 'Hand Holding Policy', a major component of the Mizoram government's flagship programme aimed at strengthening the local economy and empowering communities.
Encouragement for Financial Independence
Guest of honour PC Vanlalpeki, local council member of Bethlehem Vengthlang, encouraged participants to view these green skills as a viable pathway to financial independence. Vanlalpeki highlighted the growing importance of self-employment opportunities in the modern economy, advocating for specialized skill development as a means to achieve economic resilience and personal growth.

The inaugural programme concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Subhaprada Behera, scientist-B at ICFRE-BRC, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their dedication to promoting sustainable environmental practices. This training programme not only aims to impart technical skills but also seeks to inspire a broader movement towards eco-friendly entrepreneurship in Mizoram, aligning with national goals of sustainability and rural development.
