IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Across India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the further advancement of the southwest monsoon over many parts of the country in the coming days. In its bulletin issued on June 4, the weather agency forecast widespread rainfall activity and issued alerts for thunderstorms, heavy to very heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds across various regions through the next week.

North India

June 5

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are likely to experience rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh may see thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand, while hailstorm activity is possible in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.

June 6

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Uttarakhand will continue to have rain and thunderstorms. Himachal Pradesh may experience thunderstorms with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and East Uttar Pradesh are likely to see gusty winds of 40–50 kmph along with thunderstorm activity.

South India

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep during the period. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to witness very heavy rainfall from June 5–7, with heavy rainfall continuing from June 8–10. Kerala and Coastal Karnataka are expected to receive heavy rainfall from June 5–10. Telangana may experience heavy rainfall from June 5–8. Heavy rainfall is also likely over North and South Interior Karnataka on multiple days through June 10. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may receive heavy rainfall during June 9–10.

West India

Konkan & Goa, Marathwada, and Madhya Maharashtra are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan & Goa from June 5–10. Madhya Maharashtra may witness heavy rainfall on June 5 and again from June 7–10. Thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely across several parts of the region.

Central India

East and West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Thundersquall conditions with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, are likely over East and West Madhya Pradesh on June 5. Chhattisgarh may continue to experience thunderstorms and squally weather through June 6.

East India

Isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over Gangetic West Bengal and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim through June 8, and Jharkhand through June 7. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are likely to experience gusty winds of 40–50 kmph from June 5–8 and light rainfall today. Bihar may see rainfall on June 5 and again from June 7–10, while Odisha may experience rainfall from June 5–10.
