In a major leadership reshuffle, Shreyas Iyer is set to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20 captain for the upcoming England tour and the Asian Games. The decision is expected to be formalized during the selection panel meeting on June 6.
Tour Schedule and Captaincy Change
The UK tour begins with two T20Is against Ireland on June 26 and 28, followed by five T20Is and three ODIs in England starting July 1. Shreyas Iyer, aged 31, will lead the side in all these matches. Tilak Varma is likely to be named vice-captain, while 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns his maiden senior team call-up.
Suryakumar Yadav's Exit
Suryakumar Yadav is being dropped from the squad due to poor form over the last 18 months. Despite captaining India to a T20 World Cup victory earlier this year, his recent performances have not been up to the mark, leading to this decision.
Asian Games Squad
Two separate squads will be announced for the UK tour and the Asian Games in Japan. Tilak Varma is likely to lead the Asian Games squad, which will feature a mix of experienced players and young talents. The Asian Games are scheduled to take place after the England tour.
The selection committee has also decided to give a chance to young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who at 15 years and 5 months, will be one of the youngest players to represent India at the senior level. His inclusion is seen as a move to invest in future talent.
Shreyas Iyer, who has previously led India in limited-overs series, will now have the opportunity to establish himself as the long-term T20 captain. His leadership will be crucial in the build-up to the next T20 World Cup.
