The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued comprehensive heatwave safety guidelines as parts of India experienced scorching temperatures, with heatwave conditions forecast across several regions for the next seven days. The advisory urges citizens to take necessary precautions, including avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and refraining from strenuous outdoor activities during periods of high temperature.
Advisory for Workers and Public
The IMD's advisories specifically cover informal and gig workers, as well as all individuals who must work outdoors. The guidelines outline essential dos and don'ts to mitigate heat-related risks. Civic and health authorities have been instructed to ensure adequate support, including access to drinking water, shelter, and emergency kits containing items such as umbrellas, head coverings, hand towels, hand fans, and electrolyte/glucose/oral rehydration solutions.
Health Impacts of Heatwaves
The health impacts of heatwaves typically include dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. The IMD emphasizes the importance of recognizing these symptoms and taking immediate action to prevent serious health consequences.
Current Temperature Situation
The advisory comes at a time when maximum temperatures in many parts of northwest, central, and peninsular India are ranging from 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. The highest maximum temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius was recorded at Banda in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. In several regions, temperatures have been observed to be markedly above normal by five degrees or more, exacerbating the risk of heat-related illnesses.
