IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Hot, Humid Conditions in Mumbai Till Saturday
IMD Yellow Alert for Hot and Humid Mumbai Till Saturday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for hot and humid conditions in isolated parts of Mumbai until Saturday. Day temperatures on Thursday showed an upward trend, with the IMD Colaba observatory recording a maximum temperature of 33.2 degrees Celsius, close to normal. In contrast, the IMD Santacruz observatory logged a higher 35.9 degrees Celsius, approximately 2.4 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.

Reasons Behind the Temperature Spike

IMD officials attributed the rise in temperatures to an anticyclonic system prevailing over the region, combined with a delayed onset of the sea breeze. The sea breeze typically helps moderate daytime temperatures in Mumbai, but its late arrival has contributed to the heat. While some marginal relief may be experienced over the weekend, officials cautioned that no significant drop in temperatures is expected immediately.

An IMD official stated, "Next week may see slightly lower daytime temperatures compared to this week, but overall discomfort due to summer conditions will persist."

Minimum Temperatures and Humidity Levels

Minimum temperatures across the city remained largely normal. Colaba recorded a low of around 25 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz logged 24.4 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels stayed high, adding to the discomfort. Relative humidity was recorded at 76 percent at Colaba and 70 percent at Santacruz, indicating that muggy conditions are likely to continue over the next few days.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. The yellow alert serves as a caution for potential heat-related issues, especially in isolated pockets of the city.
