Jamshedpur: With the mercury hovering around 43 degrees Celsius and heat wave-like conditions prevailing across the entire Kolhan division, the Jamshedpur Sadar Hospital on Friday inaugurated a 10-bed dedicated centre to manage heat wave cases.
Centre Facilities and Equipment
The newly established centre is equipped with two oxygen cylinders and concentrators, along with four emergency trolleys designed to carry medicines and diagnostic tools directly to patients' beds, according to hospital officials.
Civil surgeon Dr. Sahir Pall, who oversees the Sadar Hospital, stated, "Provision of water spray bottles, ice packs, refrigerated intravenous fluids, Oral Rehydration Solution packs, and electrolyte replenishment kits have been made available to the paramedical staff at the centre. This ensures no delay in arranging medical items to begin treatment of emergency cases."
Advanced Cooling System
Dr. Pall further added, "An advanced cooling tub is also available at the centre, which will be effective in quickly reducing high blood temperature of heat wave-affected patients."
Staffing and Operations
The official confirmed that two doctors and four nurses, along with assisting paramedics, will be present at the centre around the clock. "We have deployed personnel trained in treating severe hyperthermia cases to ensure proper care," he said.
Sanitation and Monitoring
The civil surgeon mentioned that cleaning staff have been assigned to maintain ward cleanliness and ensure sanitation at all times. Additionally, a three-member surveillance team from the district health department will regularly monitor the centre's operations.
Context and Preparedness
Although the Steel City has not yet reported any heat wave cases this summer, the maximum temperature has reached 42.8 degrees Celsius. With forecasts predicting a further spike in mercury in the coming days, health officials believe the care centre will prove beneficial in attending to heat wave cases promptly.
