The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) is set to inaugurate a pioneering Autism Village in Kalyan West, marking a significant step forward in creating inclusive urban infrastructure for neurodiverse individuals. This innovative project, located in the Barave area near the Ring Road, is specifically designed to provide a supportive environment for children with autism while simultaneously serving as a recreational space for the general public.
Dual-Purpose Design: Specialized Zones for Autism and Public Recreation
Spanning an impressive 12,772 square meters, the Autism Village will be divided into two distinct zones. One zone will be exclusively dedicated to children with autism, featuring specialized facilities tailored to their unique needs. The adjacent zone will function as a public garden, accessible to all citizens, thereby fostering community integration and awareness.
KDMC's Garden Superintendent Sanjay Jadhav elaborated on the specialized features, stating, "The dedicated zone for children with autism includes a comprehensive sensory garden, sensory pathways, sensory-integrated play equipment, a meditation center, and a fully-equipped therapy center. These elements are scientifically designed to provide therapeutic benefits and create a calming environment."
Addressing a Critical Need: Autism Prevalence in India
Autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges in communication and social interaction, affects an estimated 1 in 100 children under the age of 10 in India. Individuals with autism often experience sensory overload from sounds, lights, smells, tastes, and textures. Sensory gardens, like the one being developed, are proven to help regulate sensory input and provide a soothing atmosphere, making them invaluable for therapy and daily management.
Leadership Commitment and Project Timeline
KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goel, accompanied by Additional Town Planner Santosh Doiphode, conducted a thorough inspection of the site this past Saturday. Commissioner Goel has directed officials to expedite the remaining work to ensure the project's completion by April 2, coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day.
Commissioner Goel emphasized the project's far-reaching impact, noting, "Once operational, this facility is expected to benefit children with autism not only from within KDMC limits but also from adjoining cities and the broader Mumbai Metropolitan Region. It represents a model for inclusive urban development that other municipalities can emulate."
