In response to the rising incidence of communicable diseases during the monsoon season, the health department has issued a comprehensive advisory for the public. The department has cautioned against the spread of illnesses such as diarrhoea, jaundice, and typhoid, urging citizens to remain extremely vigilant.
Contamination Risks and Preventive Measures
According to health officials, the rainy season significantly increases the risk of drinking water sources becoming contaminated. “Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize the use of clean drinking water and maintain hygiene practices,” the advisory states. To prevent waterborne diseases, the department recommends the following measures:
- Use only boiled water for drinking. Wells and other water sources should be chlorinated as per the instructions of health workers.
- Do not mix un-boiled water with boiled water under any circumstances.
- Water from public distribution systems, RO filters, canned water, and chlorinated water should be boiled for at least 20 minutes before consumption.
- Use boiled water to prepare ice, cold drinks, pickles, and chutneys.
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap after using the toilet and before handling food.
- Use clean water to wash dishes and rinse the mouth.
- Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly before use.
Preventing Spread from Infected Individuals
The advisory emphasizes special care to prevent disease transmission from infected individuals. Those who are ill should not handle food, and utensils used by patients should not be shared with others. Handwashing with soap before eating and after using the toilet is essential.
Seeking Medical Attention
The health department has urged the public to seek medical attention if symptoms of any such diseases appear and to inform local health workers promptly. In cases of diarrhoea, rehydration therapy is critical to prevent dehydration due to loss of water and salts. Effective options include salted rice water, coconut water, lemon water with salt and sugar, and ORS solution, the advisory states.
