IT Professional Bravely Saves Pet Dog from Leopard Attack in Nilgiris
In a harrowing incident that underscores the growing human-wildlife conflict in forested regions, a young IT professional from Bengaluru was attacked by a leopard while courageously saving his pet dog. The terrifying encounter occurred on Tuesday night within the campus of a private school located in Kotagiri, a picturesque town in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district.
Details of the Terrifying Nighttime Encounter
The victim has been identified as Bahadur, a 25-year-old software engineer employed with a prominent IT firm in Bengaluru. Bahadur is the elder son of Janak, a Nepali national who has served as a night watchman at the school for over fifteen years. Janak resides on the school premises with his family, and Bahadur was visiting his parents after opting for a work-from-home arrangement for a few days.
On the fateful night, Bahadur stepped outside his family's residence with his beloved pet dog due to poor mobile network connectivity inside the house. He needed to attend a crucial online office meeting. As he was returning home around 11:15 PM, a stealthy leopard suddenly emerged and attempted to attack his dog.
Heroic Rescue Attempt Turns Dangerous
Displaying remarkable presence of mind and bravery, Bahadur immediately raised an alarm to alert others. He then began throwing stones at the wild cat in a desperate attempt to scare it away and protect his canine companion. His quick actions successfully allowed the dog to escape unharmed.
However, the agitated leopard turned its attention to Bahadur, launching a swift attack. The big cat inflicted injuries on Bahadur's face and hands before fleeing back into the surrounding darkness. The sudden assault left the young professional wounded and in shock.
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment
Alerted by the commotion, local residents rushed to Bahadur's aid and promptly transported him to Kotagiri Government Hospital for initial medical attention. After receiving first aid, he was transferred to the Nilgiris Government Medical College Hospital for more comprehensive treatment. Medical authorities confirmed that Bahadur is currently undergoing care and his condition is reported as stable.
Forest Department Issues Safety Advisory
District Forest Officer Gowtham addressed the incident, emphasizing that the area has known leopard movement patterns. He revealed that residents have been repeatedly advised to avoid venturing outdoors during nighttime hours due to the inherent risks. "Monitoring has been intensified following the incident," Gowtham stated, highlighting the department's proactive measures to prevent similar occurrences.
This alarming episode serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between human settlements and wildlife habitats in regions like the Nilgiris. While Bahadur's heroic actions saved his pet, the incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines in areas prone to wildlife encounters.
