Maharashtra Heatstroke: 95 Cases, 4 Lakh in OPD Since March

The number of heatstroke cases in Maharashtra is escalating as temperatures continue to surge across the state. According to the health department, 95 heatstroke cases have been recorded from March 1 to April 29, while more than 4 lakh individuals sought treatment at outpatient departments (OPDs) for heat-related symptoms during this period.

Suspected Deaths and Official Data

Four suspected heatstroke deaths have been reported in the state since March 1. State epidemiologist Dr. Raju Sule stated, 'We have reported 95 cases of heatstroke and zero confirmed deaths until now. This year, maximum temperatures have crossed 40°C in several districts on multiple occasions.' Health department records indicate that nearly 4.08 lakh people visited medical, cardiac, and pediatric OPDs with symptoms related to heatstroke. Earlier, TOI reported four suspected heatstroke deaths based on these records, with two casualties from Ahilyanagar and one each from Latur and Solapur.

Districts Most Affected

Since March 1, Nandurbar has registered the highest number of heatwave cases (14) among all Maharashtra districts, followed by Nashik (7) and Gadchiroli (5). Nandurbar and Gadchiroli have been experiencing severe heatwave conditions in late April, with temperatures crossing the 45°C mark, making them among the worst-affected districts. In recent days, temperatures in these areas have consistently ranged between 43.2°C and over 45°C, resulting in multiple heatstroke cases.

Health Department Measures

With several districts recording temperatures above 40°C early in the summer, health authorities have flagged heatstroke as a major public health concern. The health department has directed all district medical officers to ensure the availability of cold rooms at primary health centers. Hospitals and health institutions have been instructed to maintain adequate stocks of medicines, intravenous fluids, and oral rehydration salts. Additionally, district health officers have been asked to conduct training sessions for medical officers on diagnosing and reporting heatstroke cases on the state health portal.

These measures aim to mitigate the impact of the ongoing heatwave and prevent further casualties as temperatures are expected to remain high in the coming weeks.
