Marathon Runner Injured in Stray Dog Attack During Training
Marathon Runner Injured in Stray Dog Attack During Training

A veteran marathon runner from Surat sustained serious injuries in a stray dog attack during an early morning training run on April 29, jeopardizing his preparations for the upcoming Comrades Marathon in South Africa scheduled for June this year.

Details of the Incident

Rajiv Sheth, a 60-year-old exporter and seasoned long-distance runner who has completed 171 marathons across eight countries, began his training run around 5 a.m. from Vesu towards Dumas. Suddenly, three stray dogs chased him. One of the dogs bit his hand, causing a deep wound on his wrist and tearing flesh from his forearm.

Bleeding heavily, Sheth was noticed by passers-by in the Dumas area who quickly came to his aid and ensured he received prompt medical attention. He was later administered an anti-rabies vaccine.

Runner's Account

Sheth recounted the incident, stating, "I survived because I didn't fall. Had I collapsed, all three dogs could have attacked me." He described himself as a dog lover and former pet owner, emphasizing that the issue is no longer about isolated attacks but points to a broader concern over the unchecked rise in the stray dog population and increasingly aggressive behavior.

Broader Implications

Sheth expressed concern about safety in public spaces, saying, "We have invested significantly in developing the Dumas seafront, yet basic safety remains compromised." He added that local residents later informed him the dog that attacked him was suspected to be rabid and was subsequently killed.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing stray dog menace. In 2023, Parag Desai, executive director of Wagh Bakri Tea Group, died after falling while trying to escape stray dogs during a morning walk in Ahmedabad.

This attack underscores the need for effective measures to control stray dog populations and ensure public safety in urban areas.
