Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Reviews ZMC & H Upgrades

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma chaired a meeting of the governing body of the Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC & H) on Friday at the CM Conference Hall in Aizawl. The meeting was attended by Vanlalthlana, Minister for Higher & Technical Education; Lalrinpuii, Minister for Health & Family Welfare; Baryl Vanneihsangi, MLA; and other governing body members.

Strengthening Physical Medicine Department

The governing body discussed improvements to the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, noting that currently only one doctor is available, handling both clinical and faculty responsibilities. The body stressed the urgent need to strengthen the department by recruiting additional staff and enhancing resources to meet patient demand.

Critical Care Block Construction

The meeting reviewed the construction of the critical care block, which is being built through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding. It was noted that necessary equipment for the block is expected to be procured shortly. Members discussed steps to ensure effective utilization of the facility once it becomes operational, aiming to boost intensive care capabilities.

Priority Projects and MPLAN Proposals

Proposals aimed at strengthening and upgrading ZMC & H that have already been submitted into the MPLAN (Mizoram Plan) were reviewed. The governing body prepared a priority list for implementation, citing that it would not be feasible to undertake all projects simultaneously. This prioritization ensures focused resource allocation on the most critical needs.

Expansion and Capacity

Over the past two years, ZMC & H has added 30 new cabins and 13 new ICU units, and repaired a large number of previously non-functional hospital beds. With a total capacity of 517 beds, ZMC & H has now become the largest hospital in Mizoram, significantly enhancing healthcare access for the state's population.

Academic Developments

The meeting noted that in October 2024, 10 new postgraduate seats were introduced, and nine students are currently pursuing their studies. It also highlighted that the third batch of MBBS students recently completed their course, marking steady progress in medical education at the institution.
