Mohali to Get Its First Dedicated Old Age Home on Three-Acre Site in Sector 78
The city of Mohali is poised to establish its first dedicated old age home, following the Punjab government's allocation of a three-acre site in Sector 78 for this crucial project. This development comes after years of persistent administrative and legal efforts, including proceedings in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as confirmed by Deputy Mayor Kuljeet Singh Bedi.
Addressing the Needs of Senior Citizens in Mohali
Deputy Mayor Bedi emphasized that the new facility will be modeled after the existing old age home in Tapa, Punjab, aiming to provide comprehensive care for elderly residents. The home is designed to offer structured care, essential medical support, and a secure living environment, addressing a significant gap in Mohali's infrastructure.
Bedi highlighted that a substantial number of senior citizens in Mohali currently live alone, often because their children have settled abroad or in other cities. This situation underscores the urgent need for dedicated facilities that can ensure the well-being and safety of the elderly population.
Legal and Administrative Framework
During a press conference held on Tuesday, Bedi noted that this initiative aligns with the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007. This legislation mandates the establishment of old age homes for indigent elderly persons, making the project a step toward fulfilling legal obligations and social responsibilities.
Bedi revealed that he has been actively pursuing this matter with the state government and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) over the years, through various means such as affidavits and representations. His efforts have been instrumental in securing the land allotment after prolonged follow-ups.
Future Steps and Commitment
The deputy mayor assured that he will continue to monitor the project closely to ensure the timely construction and operationalization of the old age home. This commitment reflects a broader goal to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in Mohali, providing them with the care and support they deserve in their later years.
This project not only addresses immediate needs but also sets a precedent for future developments in elderly care infrastructure across the region, promoting a more inclusive and supportive community for all age groups.
