Tragic Drowning in Abandoned Stone Quarry Claims Mother and Daughter in Jalna
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in the rural expanse of Jalna district on Friday afternoon, resulting in the tragic deaths of a mother and her young daughter. The duo drowned in an abandoned stone quarry located at Pandharpurwadi village in Bhokardan taluka, approximately 75 kilometers from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The calamity occurred around 3 PM when Kaweri Dashrath Mohite, aged 30, and her 12-year-old daughter, Sonali, visited the quarry site to wash clothes. According to police reports, Sonali accidentally slipped into the water-filled quarry. In a desperate attempt to rescue her daughter, Kaweri immediately jumped into the water without assessing its depth or calling for help.
Assistant Inspector Yogesh Ubale of the Hasnabad police station provided crucial insights into the sequence of events. He stated, "Instead of shouting for help, the woman jumped into the quarry to save her daughter without being aware how deep the water was." This impulsive act, driven by maternal instinct, proved fatal as both were unable to escape the deep water.
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath
Despite efforts, rescue teams could not reach the spot in time to save Kaweri and Sonali. Police confirmed that both victims had drowned before any assistance could arrive. After the necessary medical procedures, the remains were handed over to their grieving family members. The local authorities have officially registered a case of accidental death, highlighting the lack of foul play and underscoring the perilous nature of such abandoned sites.
