Mysuru district recorded 723 snake bite cases and six deaths last year, with health officials flagging April to October as the high-risk period, coinciding with peak summer. Officials stated that rising temperatures force snakes out of their burrows in search of cooler, moister areas, increasing human contact, especially in residential areas and forest-fringe villages.
In 2024 alone, the district reported 675 snakebite cases and four deaths, indicating a sustained seasonal trend. Forest-fringe villages in Hunsur, HD Kote, Saragur, Periyapatna, and KR Nagar taluks accounted for most cases. Incidents were also reported in Gundurao Nagar and JC Nagar near the Chamundi Hills, as well as in populated localities such as Saraswathipuram and Dattagalli.
Officials said snake bites were reported even while children and students were playing cricket and football in playgrounds, underlining the risk during outdoor activity in summer. As a precaution, the district health department has stepped up awareness drives and preparedness at government hospitals ahead of the peak summer months.
