Short Circuit Triggers Fire at Nellore Government Hospital, Prompt Evacuation Ensures Safety
A sudden fire accident, sparked by an electric short circuit, caused significant alarm among patients at the maternity and children's ward of the Government General Hospital in Nellore on Sunday. The incident, which occurred in the MCH (Maternity and Child Health) block, was swiftly managed by hospital staff, with no injuries reported despite the initial panic.
Cause and Immediate Response
The fire is suspected to have originated from a short circuit in a stabiliser connected to an air conditioning unit within the ward. In response, the electricity supply to the affected area was immediately cut off to prevent further hazards. Hospital security personnel and medical staff acted promptly, extinguishing the flames before they could spread extensively.
According to official reports, the fire resulted in damage to two beds, but the quick intervention prevented any harm to patients or staff. As a precautionary measure, a total of 56 patients were evacuated from the high-risk areas. This included 43 children from the high dependency unit (HDU) and labour HD ward, along with 13 newborn babies who were relocated to the Trauma Care Unit to ensure continuous medical attention.

Nellore District Collector Himanshu Shukla confirmed that the fire was due to a short circuit and emphasized that the situation was brought under complete control. He reassured the public that there was no cause for panic, stating, "All patients are safe. Security staff acted promptly and evacuated patients to safety. They were shifted to different wards on the 1st floor, the IP block, and the Trauma Care Unit as a precaution."
Following the incident, Collector Himanshu Shukla and Superintendent of Police Ajitha Vejendla visited the hospital to assess the damage and oversee recovery operations. Steps were initiated to restore the power supply, ensuring minimal disruption to hospital services. The officials' timely presence helped coordinate efforts and maintain order during the emergency.
