North Karnataka Reels Under Severe Heatwave, Temperatures Soar Past 40°C
North Karnataka Heatwave: Temperatures Surge, Life Disrupted

North Karnataka Grapples with Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Skyrocket

North Karnataka is currently enduring a severe and unrelenting heat spell, with temperatures soaring dramatically across multiple districts over the past week. Even typically moderate regions such as Dharwad and Belagavi are experiencing an unusual and sharp surge in heat, leaving residents to cope with challenging conditions.

Temperature Records Show Alarming Peaks

On a recent Friday, Dharwad witnessed temperatures starting at 28°C in the early morning hours before climbing sharply to 38°C by noon. In Vijayapura, the mercury reached 31°C by 8 am and escalated to a scorching 40°C by 3 pm. Other districts reported similarly high readings: Bagalkot registered 39°C, Gadag recorded 37°C, and Haveri saw temperatures ranging between 36°C and 39°C. In contrast, Uttara Kannada remained relatively cooler at around 29°C, except for its coastal areas.

IMD Issues Caution Amid Rising Mercury

Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not yet issued a formal heatwave alert, it has issued a stern caution that temperatures may increase by an additional 3-4°C in the coming days. This potential rise could push several areas beyond the critical 40°C mark, exacerbating the already severe conditions.

Daily Life Severely Disrupted by Extreme Heat

The heatwave has begun to profoundly disrupt daily life across North Karnataka. Streets appear deserted after 11 am as people avoid venturing out during peak heat hours. The impact is particularly harsh on street vendors and daily wage earners, whose livelihoods depend on outdoor work. Construction labourers, among the worst affected, have adjusted their schedules significantly, starting work at dawn and concluding before noon to escape the intense sun.

Surge in Demand for Cooling Products

Concurrently, the searing heat has triggered a significant spike in demand for various cooling beverages and products. Tender coconut water, lemonade, buttermilk, aerated drinks, and seasonal fruits like watermelon are experiencing brisk sales. Ice-cream parlours are also reporting increased footfall as residents seek relief from the oppressive temperatures.

Health Authorities Intensify Advisories and Measures

Health authorities in Dharwad have ramped up their advisories, urging the public to avoid direct sunlight, especially between noon and evening. Specific groups such as senior citizens, children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions have been advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours.

District Health Officer Dr. SM Honakeri emphasized that preventive measures are being strengthened across the district. Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) are being distributed through primary health centres, while intravenous fluids are being administered in severe cases. Dr. Honakeri advised that one sachet of ORS should be mixed in a litre of water and consumed within 24 hours to combat dehydration effectively.

Emergency Protocols for Heatstroke Cases

Authorities stress that anyone showing signs of heatstroke should be moved immediately to a cool, ventilated area. Tight clothing should be loosened, and cooling measures such as applying wet clothes should be initiated promptly. It is crucial not to give water to unconscious individuals. In emergencies, residents can contact the medical helpline at 104 for immediate assistance. A dedicated ward has been established at the district hospital specifically to treat heat-related illnesses, ensuring timely medical intervention.
