Police Arrest Jewellery Trader as Mastermind Behind Barak Valley Dacoity Gang
In a significant law enforcement breakthrough, police in Cachar district have apprehended a jewellery trader from Narsingpur, accusing him of orchestrating a series of dacoities across the Barak Valley region. Officials confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, highlighting a major crackdown on organized criminal activity that has plagued the area.
Key Arrest in Special Police Operation
The accused, identified as Shivajit Deb, also known as Bablu, is a resident of Clever House and the owner of a local jewellery shop. He was taken into custody during a meticulously planned special operation conducted by Sonai police on Monday evening. The arrest followed specific intelligence inputs and sustained surveillance efforts by law enforcement agencies.
Police authorities stated that Deb is believed to be the primary conspirator behind multiple robbery cases, including a recent dacoity at Salepur near Natun Bazar. With his detention, the total number of individuals held in connection with this criminal gang has now increased to six.
Organized Criminal Network Uncovered
Investigations have revealed that the gang operated with a high degree of organization and planning. A police officer involved in the case explained, "Preliminary findings indicate that Shivajit Deb was not only financing the gang's activities but also directing its operations from behind the scenes. The group functioned in a systematic manner, conducting thorough reconnaissance before executing their criminal acts."
During the operation, police successfully recovered substantial evidence, including:
- Stolen gold ornaments
- Two motorcycles used in the crimes
- Several mobile phones
- Sharp weapons suspected to have been utilized during the dacoities
Modus Operandi and Previous Arrests
Investigators detailed that gang members employed deceptive tactics to gain access to their targets. They often posed as ordinary visitors to enter houses and business establishments before launching their attacks. This method allowed them to bypass security measures and catch victims off guard.
Prior to Deb's arrest, five other individuals had been detained in connection with the same case:
- Zaidul Islam Barbhuiya (30) from Cachar
- Askar Ali, also known as Kala, from Cachar
- Burhan Uddin Choudhury from Cachar
- Idr Ali Laskar from Cachar
- Afzal Hussain (34) from Hojai
Widespread Criminal Activity and Police Response
Police reports indicate that this criminal gang had been actively operating across various parts of the Barak Valley and adjoining areas for a considerable period. Their activities had generated significant fear and panic among local residents, disrupting community safety and security.
The breakthrough in the case came following a crucial tip-off received by authorities. In response, police intensified their surveillance operations and began closely tracking suspicious movements throughout the region. This coordinated effort ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the alleged mastermind.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
All arrested individuals have been presented before a local court and remanded to judicial custody as legal proceedings move forward. Police are now delving deeper into the gang's operations, examining potential connections with other criminal networks active in the region.
Officials have indicated that further arrests are likely as the investigation continues to progress. The police remain committed to dismantling the entire criminal structure and ensuring that all involved parties face appropriate legal consequences for their alleged actions.
