Major Chemical Gas Leak in Palghar Triggers Mass Evacuation and Emergency Response

A significant oleum gas leak from a chemical manufacturing unit in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Monday afternoon prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 people, including approximately 1,600 students, as dense white fumes enveloped a five-kilometer radius. The incident, which occurred around 2 pm at Bhageria Industries Ltd located in the Boisar MIDC industrial area, led to widespread disruption and emergency mobilization.

Immediate Activation of Disaster Management Protocols

Palghar District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed that the district disaster management plan was activated immediately upon detection of the leak. "The situation is being constantly monitored in coordination with all departments concerned. Citizens should not believe in rumours," Dr. Jakhar stated, urging residents to remain indoors and adhere strictly to official instructions. She emphasized that coordinated efforts are ongoing with multiple agencies to ensure full containment and prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

District Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh provided further details, noting that authorities are "taking all possible measures to deal with the situation" and advised villagers against panicking. He explained that smoke clouds had formed over Boisar town, leading to the evacuation of locals in the direction of the wind, with the affected area being sealed off to the public.

Details of the Leak and Its Impact

According to an official press release from the district administration, the leak originated from a 2,500-liter oleum day tank, releasing hazardous fumes that spread rapidly due to strong winds. The resulting cloud impacted nearby schools, factories, and residential areas, necessitating the evacuation of over a thousand factory workers and more than 1,600 students from a local school as a precautionary safety measure.

Authorities reported that three individuals suffered minor eye irritation, but fortunately, no serious injuries were recorded. The Palghar administration continues to monitor air quality closely and has assured residents that there is no immediate threat, although the cause of the leak remains under investigation.

Challenges Faced by Emergency Response Teams

Emergency teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and the Fire Brigade rushed to the site but initially encountered difficulties in reaching the exact source of the leak due to the high concentration of smoke. "Due to the high smoke concentration in affected areas, response teams were facing difficulties in reaching the exact location of the leak," the official release stated.

Once access was secured, chemical experts and NDRF personnel, equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), managed to locate the leak and deployed sandbags around the tank to suppress the fumes effectively. This containment effort was critical in mitigating further spread and ensuring the safety of the surrounding environment.

Ongoing Monitoring and Public Safety Measures

In response to the incident, authorities have implemented several safety measures:

  • Evacuation of residential and industrial areas in the wind direction.
  • Sealing of the affected zone to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Continuous air quality assessments to monitor any residual hazards.
  • Public advisories urging citizens to move in the opposite direction of the wind and smoke and seek safe locations.

Superintendent Deshmukh reiterated the importance of public cooperation, stating, "Citizens are requested to move in the opposite direction of the wind and smoke, head to a safe location and do not panic." The administration remains vigilant, with ongoing efforts to ensure that all necessary precautions are in place to safeguard community health and safety.
