Kanpur: The Kanpur Zoo authorities have heightened their alertness following the confirmation of rabies in wild dog pups. The infected pups are now under close surveillance, with their movements being meticulously tracked. All medical personnel and staff who had contact with the pups have received anti-rabies vaccinations as a precautionary measure.
Investigation into Rabies Transmission
An investigation is currently underway to determine how the rabies virus was transmitted to the pups, despite them having received prior vaccinations. Last year, a pair of wild dogs was transferred to the zoo from Visakhapatnam. Presently, the zoo houses two male wild dogs and one female. The female gave birth to three healthy cubs in January. However, in May, the cubs began to show a reduced appetite. Veterinary examinations were conducted, but no definitive cause was identified at that time.
Decline and Death of Cubs
The health of the cubs continued to deteriorate, leading to the death of one cub on May 28, another on June 6, and the last on June 10. Following their deaths, postmortem examinations were performed, and viscera samples were sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly for analysis. The report, received late Friday night, confirmed the presence of rabies.
Wildlife doctor Dr. Nasir stated that the IVRI report verified the rabies infection in the wild dog pups, prompting an increase in vigilance. The pups had been vaccinated, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain how the rabies infection was transmitted to them.
