Ranchi Initiates Free HPV Vaccination Campaign for Adolescent Girls
In a significant public health initiative, the city of Ranchi has launched a free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive specifically targeting adolescent girls between the ages of 14 and 15 years. The vaccine will be administered at no cost at government hospitals and community health centers that are equipped with proper cold chain systems to ensure the vaccine's efficacy and safety.
Official Launch and First Beneficiary
The state-level drive was inaugurated on Saturday by Irfan Ansari, the Minister of Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare, alongside Sanjay Seth, the Union Minister of State for Defence and Member of Parliament from Ranchi. This initiative is part of a nationwide campaign that was officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Ajmer. In Ranchi, the first beneficiary of this crucial program was Saloni Kumari, marking a pivotal moment in the fight against cervical cancer in the region.
Addressing Cervical Cancer: A Major Health Concern
Dr. Prabhat Kumar, the Civil Surgeon of Ranchi, emphasized the urgency of this vaccination drive. "Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India and has a high mortality rate," he stated. The government will be administering the Gardasil-4 vaccine to eligible adolescent girls, provided they do not have any major health complications or severe allergies. This vaccine is specifically designed to combat HPV types 16 and 18, which are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases globally.
Alarming Statistics and Government Response
According to data from the National Cancer Registry Programme under the Indian Council of Medical Research, India reported 79,103 new cases of cervical cancer and 34,805 deaths in recent years. In response to this alarming situation, Minister Irfan Ansari highlighted the financial barrier many families face, noting that the HPV vaccine costs approximately Rs 4,000 in private hospitals, making it unaffordable for a large segment of the population. "The government is providing this vaccine free of cost to safeguard our daughters from cervical cancer," he affirmed, underscoring the commitment to public health.
Broader Health Initiatives and Future Plans
In addition to the HPV vaccination drive, the state is undertaking several other health measures to improve overall healthcare delivery:
- Large-scale recruitment of doctors to address the shortage of medical professionals across various districts.
- Initiation of aplastic anaemia check-ups in all districts as part of a broader effort to make the state anaemia-free.
Ranchi MP Sanjay Seth urged the public to actively participate in ensuring that all eligible adolescent girls receive the vaccine. He announced that the vaccination drive will continue daily for the next three months, after which it will be seamlessly integrated into the state's ongoing vaccination programs to ensure sustained protection and awareness.
This comprehensive approach not only aims to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer but also strengthens the healthcare infrastructure, making preventive care more accessible to vulnerable populations in Ranchi and beyond.
