Rare Marine Amphipod Species Discovered in Indian Waters for First Time

In a significant scientific breakthrough, researchers from Berhampur University have discovered a rare marine amphipod species in Indian waters for the very first time. The discovery was made at Arjyapalli in Ganjam district, Odisha, marking a notable addition to India's marine biodiversity records.

Discovery and Identification of the Species

The species, identified as Stenothoe lowryi, was collected by marine science researchers during a study conducted in January last year. At least eight specimens were gathered from the rocky habitat of Arjyapalli. After thorough analysis, the team confirmed this to be a new and rare marine amphipod species for Indian waters.

Assistant Professor Shesdev Patro, who led the research team, explained that Stenothoe lowryi was previously recorded only in Malaysia, with its distribution elsewhere remaining largely unknown until now. This discovery expands the known geographic range of this elusive species.

Characteristics and Ecological Significance

The newly discovered amphipod measures approximately 5.5 mm in length and is distinguished by its large claws and preference for rocky marine environments. Shreeraj Nahak, a researcher and co-author of the published article, highlighted these distinctive features that help identify the species.

Research scholars Gitanjali Bhoi and Suman Patra, who were instrumental in the discovery, noted that while little is currently known about its specific ecological role, the species is believed to contribute significantly to the marine food web. Their involvement underscores the collaborative nature of this scientific achievement.

Research Funding and Publication

The study was conducted with funding provided under the Mukhyamantri Research Innovation Extramural Programme (MRIEP) of the Odisha State Higher Education Council (OSHEC) for the 2024-25 period. This financial support enabled the comprehensive research that led to this important discovery.

Details of the species have been published in the latest edition of the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, providing international recognition for this finding. The publication validates the research methodology and conclusions drawn by the Berhampur University team.

Ongoing Investigations and Previous Discoveries

According to Professor Patro, molecular and ecological investigations of the new species are currently ongoing. These studies aim to gain deeper insights into the species' biology, behavior, and ecological interactions within its marine habitat.

This discovery follows previous successes by the same marine science research team. In January last year, they discovered another marine amphipod species in the Chilika lagoon near Rambha, naming it Grandidierella geetanjalae in honor of Geetanjali Dash, Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University.

Furthermore, in November 2022, the team collected a new species of marine amphipod from Chilika Lake at Barkul, which they named Parhyale odian after Odisha's native language. These consecutive discoveries demonstrate the team's consistent contribution to marine biodiversity documentation.

The discovery of Stenothoe lowryi in Indian waters represents more than just a new species record. It highlights the rich, yet under-explored marine biodiversity of India's coastal regions and emphasizes the importance of continued scientific exploration.

As research continues, scientists hope to better understand how this species interacts with its environment and contributes to marine ecosystem dynamics. Each new discovery like this one adds another piece to the complex puzzle of marine life and helps inform conservation efforts.
