Kolkata: The state health department has revoked the suspension of Prof Md Alauddin, former head of gynaecology and obstetrics at Midnapore Medical College. Alauddin was suspended alongside 11 other doctors by the previous Trinamool Congress government in January 2025 after two women died and four fell seriously ill following C-section surgeries. Doctors attributed the incidents to spurious Ringer's Lactate saline, leading to the supplier being blacklisted. The reinstatement follows a departmental probe that cleared Alauddin of direct negligence. The health department stated that the decision was based on findings that the deaths were caused by contaminated intravenous fluids rather than medical malpractice. Alauddin has resumed his duties, while the other suspended doctors await similar reviews. The case highlights ongoing concerns about medical supply quality in state hospitals.
Background of the Incident
The deaths occurred in January 2025 at Midnapore Medical College, where multiple patients developed severe reactions after receiving Ringer's Lactate saline during and after C-section procedures. An investigation revealed that the saline batch was counterfeit, containing harmful impurities. The supplier was subsequently blacklisted, and legal action was initiated.
Reinstatement and Reactions
Prof Alauddin expressed relief at the decision, stating that his reputation had been unfairly tarnished. The medical fraternity has welcomed the move, emphasizing that doctors should not be scapegoated for systemic failures. However, patient safety advocates have called for stricter oversight of pharmaceutical supplies.
