Three drugs and two mehndi products have failed quality tests and were declared substandard on Monday by the Drug Controller of Rajasthan. The announcement was made following routine inspections and laboratory analyses conducted by the state drug control department.
Details of Substandard Drugs
The drugs that failed the quality tests include Ambrodot-LS syrup, manufactured by Onex Pharmaceutical in Kanota, Jaipur. This medication is commonly prescribed for productive cough, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Another failed product is Lorazepam tablets, produced by DD Pharmaceuticals in Jaipur. Lorazepam is used to treat severe anxiety, insomnia, acute seizures, and for pre-surgery sedation. The third drug is Prutrax-SR 25, which contains hydroxyzine hydrochloride, made by Galcare Pharmaceuticals in Manglam Industrial Park, Jaipur. Hydroxyzine is primarily used for allergies such as itching and hives.
Mehndi Products Found Substandard
In addition to the pharmaceuticals, two mehndi (henna) products were also declared not of standard quality. These are PUSHP Henna, manufactured in Sojat City, and Prem Dulhan Fast Colour Cone, produced by Prem Green in the Pali district. The specific reasons for their failure have not been disclosed but are likely related to contamination or improper labeling.
Regulatory Action Taken
Drug Controller Ajay Phatak stated that the details of the samples found to be "not of standard quality" have been shared with drugs control officers across the state. Instructions have been issued to ensure that the affected stocks are not consumed by the public. The available stock will be withdrawn from the market, and necessary legal action will be initiated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Rules framed thereunder. Mr. Phatak emphasized that consumer safety is paramount and that strict measures will be taken against any violations.
Importance of Quality Control
This incident highlights the critical need for stringent quality control in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Substandard drugs can lead to treatment failure, adverse health effects, and even life-threatening situations. Similarly, contaminated mehndi products can cause skin allergies and other health issues. The drug control department regularly conducts random sampling and testing to ensure compliance with prescribed standards.
Public Advisory
Consumers are advised to check the batch numbers and manufacturing details of any medications or personal care products they purchase. If they come across any of the mentioned products, they should avoid using them and report to the nearest drug inspector. The department has also urged retailers and distributors to cooperate in the recall process and refrain from selling substandard items.
