Thrissur Fireworks Tragedy Death Toll Climbs to 14, Search Operations Halted
The devastating fireworks accident at Mundathikode in Thrissur has seen its official death toll rise to 14, following the passing of another victim on Wednesday. However, authorities have clarified that only ten bodies have been recovered intact so far, with the confirmed fatalities standing at ten individuals.
DNA Testing for Identification of Dismembered Remains
In a grim development, search teams have recovered several dismembered human body parts from the blast site. Forensic experts are now conducting extensive DNA tests to identify whom these remains belong to, as officials have confirmed that four persons remain missing following the incident.
Cadaver dogs were deployed to assist in the search operations, but these efforts were discontinued on Wednesday afternoon after authorities determined there was little chance of locating additional bodies or body parts.
Victim Identities and Medical Status
The latest victim to succumb to injuries has been identified as Praveen (45) from Pattambi, who was undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital with severe burn injuries. So far, nine bodies have been positively identified through official channels.
The deceased include:
- Sudharshanan (54), son of Vennurparakkundil Arumughan of Pazhayannur
- Vasudevan (54), son of Korman of Kumaranellur Madipuram House at Kallur, Palakkad
- Suvin (39), son of Vijayan of Puthukattil House at Kundanur, Thrissur
- Manikandan (60), son of Mundan of Palliyalil Parambil house at Alamkode, Malappuram
- Subramanian (50) of Kottummal House, Perinthalmanna in Malappuram
- Manikandan (50), son of Venkatachalam of Narayana Nivas of Kottappuram in Thrissur
According to an official release, ten people continue to receive treatment at the Thrissur Government Medical College Hospital, while one additional victim has been admitted to a private medical facility for specialized care.
Political Leaders Visit Tragedy Site
The tragedy has drawn attention from prominent political figures, with Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi, along with Kerala ministers K Rajan, V N Vasavan, R Bindu, and Kadannappalli Ramachandran visiting both the accident site and the hospitals where survivors are being treated. Their presence underscores the gravity of the incident and the government's response to the community's loss.
