Tamil Nadu's Ambitious Health Initiative Screens Over 18 Lakh Residents

In a significant public health achievement, Tamil Nadu's flagship 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' scheme has conducted comprehensive health screenings for more than 18 lakh people across the state over the past six months. Health Minister Ma Subramanian announced the milestone on Saturday, revealing that the initiative has organized 1,256 medical camps in both rural blocks and densely populated urban areas.

Widespread Referrals and Early Disease Detection

The extensive screening effort has led to at least 7 lakh individuals being referred for further medical treatment for conditions including cataract, heart diseases, renal disease, and tuberculosis. Beyond routine check-ups, these camps offered specialized consultations across 17 medical disciplines, such as neurology, gynaecology, cardiology, and oncology, enabling detailed diagnoses.

Key findings from the screenings include:

  • Over 4.28 lakh new cases of hypertension identified
  • More than 1.5 lakh new cases of diabetes detected
  • 222 new cancer cases diagnosed
  • 595 cases of tuberculosis uncovered
  • Over 46,000 patients with kidney diseases found
  • More than 1,600 individuals with cardiovascular issues identified
  • Over 66,000 cases of anaemia recorded

Scheme Objectives and Surgical Interventions

Launched by Chief Minister M K Stalin in August 2025, the 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin' scheme aims to identify and treat non-communicable and chronic diseases at early stages, preventing the need for advanced or emergency medical interventions. The initiative focuses on conditions like diabetes, hypertension, cardiac issues, and cancer.

Subramanian highlighted that the camps were completed ahead of schedule, with the final camp concluding by 7 PM on Friday. Additionally, more than 8,400 people diagnosed with cataracts have already undergone corrective surgery as part of the scheme's follow-up care.

Expanding Social Safety Nets and Beneficiary Demographics

The health initiative also serves as a vehicle to strengthen Tamil Nadu's social safety net, particularly targeting marginalized communities. Among the 18 lakh beneficiaries:

  • Over 2.7 lakh unorganised labourers received screenings
  • 96,000 sanitation workers were included in the health camps

Officials have issued 50,000 cards under the CM's Comprehensive Health Insurance scheme and provided disability certificates and assistance to more than 60,000 persons with disabilities. Subramanian also noted that the state's 'Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam' scheme has benefited at least 2.8 crore people, underscoring the government's broader commitment to accessible healthcare.

This large-scale health drive represents a proactive approach to public health management in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing early detection, specialized care, and inclusive access to medical services for all residents.
