Vat Purnima 2026: Significance

Purnima is one of the most significant days in the Hindu calendar, with 12 Purnima observances each year. Vat Purnima holds great religious and spiritual significance among Hindus. On this special day, married women observe a nirjala (waterless) fast from sunrise to sunset for the longevity and well-being of their husbands. Unmarried women can also observe this fast to pray for a desired husband. They worship the Vat Vriksha, or banyan tree, as part of the rituals.

Vat Purnima 2026: Puja Vidhi

Women wake up early in the morning and take a holy bath. After that, they wear traditional clothes and adorn themselves with solah shringar (16 adornments). They prepare a thali for the puja containing raw thread, water mixed with milk, fruits, incense sticks, an earthen lamp, cotton wicks, ghee, kumkum, haldi, akshat (unbroken rice), flowers, roli, and sweets. They worship the banyan tree by offering water, applying haldi, roli, and kumkum, offering fruits and sweets, lighting incense sticks and a diya with desi ghee, tying the sacred raw thread, and circumambulating the tree seven times. Finally, they recite the katha and seek blessings from the banyan tree, concluding with offering dakshina.

Why You Should Not Celebrate Vat Purnima During Adhik Maas

Adhik Maas, also known as Purushottam Maas, is dedicated to performing spiritual and religious activities, not for auspicious events or fasts. It is believed that observing the Vat Purnima vrat during Adhik Maas will not bring the desired benefits because this month is only for spiritual cleansing, prayers, mantra chanting, and removal of negative energies. The entire month is devoted to maintaining discipline and introspection.
