According to zoo director V M Amarakshar, Dr Sameeksha Reddy visited the zoo hospital around 10:30 PM on Thursday for follow-up treatment of a sun conure, a type of bird. Approximately an hour later, at 11:45 PM, she entered the enclosure of a pregnant hippopotamus to monitor its temperature using a thermal camera.
The animal suddenly charged at the doctor, causing critical damage to her liver and lungs. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to her injuries around 6:30 AM on Friday.

Dr Muruli Manohar, a former zoo veterinarian who was assisting Dr Reddy, stated that he had not instructed her to approach the hippopotamus at such a late hour. This has raised serious questions about the safety protocols and supervision in place at the zoo.
