Woman dies after clothes catch fire during puja in Chennai

A tragic incident occurred in Chennai's Puzhal area on Friday, where a 68-year-old woman lost her life after her clothes caught fire during a puja ceremony at her residence. The deceased, identified as Senbhagavalli, lived alone in Mariamman Nagar, Kavangarai, near Puzhal.

Family kept watch via video calls and cameras

According to police, Senbhagavalli's son works in Dubai and her daughter resides in Tiruvallur. To ensure her safety, the family regularly checked on her through video calls and surveillance cameras installed inside the house. On Friday, her son noticed smoke spreading through the house via the camera feed and immediately alerted neighbors, requesting them to check on her.

Neighbors break open door

Neighbors rushed to the house and broke open the door. They found Senbhagavalli unconscious with severe burn injuries. Investigators suspect that her clothes accidentally caught fire from camphor lit during the puja. She was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
