Shivam, a 21-year-old gym-goer, died on Sunday after battling for 22 days following a leg press incident where a trainer allegedly loaded excessive weight. The accident occurred at a gym in the Gopal Nagar Chowk area on Tibba Road in Ludhiana.
Details of the Incident
According to the family, the trainer assigned a weight disproportionate to Shivam's body capacity. During the leg press, Shivam could not lift the weight, collapsed on the spot, and suffered a severe spine injury due to nerve compression. He was hospitalized but succumbed after 22 days of struggle.
Expert Reactions and Safety Warnings
Shiva Sachdeva from D-Karve emphasized that professional trainers in proper gyms do not recommend extreme weight-training workouts. “Everything is done under the supervision of trainers as per the body’s weight and capacity,” he said.
Harry Mittal from The Athletic Edge warned that gyms must hire professional trainers, as even a minor injury could prove fatal. The incident has sparked concern over students engaging in strenuous physical activity without proper guidance.
Broader Implications for Fitness Culture
The tragedy serves as an eye-opener for fitness enthusiasts who, in pursuit of quick results, either work out under unqualified trainers or attempt heavy lifts for social media attention. Experts urge gym-goers to prioritize safety over performance and to ensure trainers are certified and attentive to individual limits.
