Over 845 Foreign Medical Graduates Apply for Internships in Tamil Nadu via New Portal

In a significant development for medical education in Tamil Nadu, at least 845 foreign medical graduates have applied for internships in state medical colleges through a newly launched portal. The Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) portal was introduced last week by State Health Minister Ma Subramaniam, aiming to simplify and expedite the internship allocation process for these graduates.

Streamlining Internship Applications for Foreign-Trained Doctors

Foreign medical graduates who complete their courses at recognized institutions abroad must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) conducted by the National Medical Commission (NMC). After obtaining an eligibility certificate and a no-objection certificate from the Tamil Nadu State Medical Council and the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, they can undertake internships in state or private medical colleges within Tamil Nadu.

Dr. R Suganthy Rajakumari, Director of Medical Education, explained that the portal was designed to reduce waiting periods and streamline allotments. "The number of such graduates applying for internships has increased now. To simplify the process of getting allotment and reduce the waiting period, a web portal was designed," she stated.

Monthly Application Process and Key Requirements

The portal facilitates a structured monthly application cycle:

  • Eligible candidates can apply from the 1st to the 10th of every month.
  • Required documents include provisional certificates, degree certificates, no-objection certificates, and NEET scorecards, which must be uploaded to the portal.
  • Vacancies in all colleges are displayed, allowing candidates to indicate their preferred internship locations.

Allotments are made based on seniority and choice of place, with results declared on the 16th of each month. Candidates can collect provisional certificates from the council between the 16th and 19th and must join their allotted colleges by the 25th of the same month.

Enhancing Medical Education and Healthcare Infrastructure

This initiative reflects Tamil Nadu's commitment to integrating foreign-trained medical professionals into its healthcare system, addressing potential shortages and enhancing service delivery. By digitizing the application process, the state aims to improve efficiency and transparency, benefiting both graduates and medical institutions.

The portal's launch comes amid broader efforts to modernize medical education and healthcare policies in India, aligning with national standards set by the NMC while catering to local needs in Tamil Nadu.
