AI and Strategic Partnerships Pave Way for Universal Healthcare in Uttar Pradesh
In a significant panel discussion titled 'Healthcare for All: Building a Healthier, Capable UP', experts emphasized that artificial intelligence, enhanced primary healthcare infrastructure, and robust collaborations between government bodies, private hospitals, and international agencies are essential to making healthcare more accessible and affordable across Uttar Pradesh.
State Health Indicators Show Improvement, Focus Shifts to Equity
Dr. Pinky Jowel, Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), reported that health indicators in Uttar Pradesh have demonstrated notable improvement between 2017 and 2025. However, the current priority is shifting towards achieving universal and equitable healthcare for all residents of the state.
"NHM is implementing four core strategies to bridge healthcare gaps," Dr. Jowel explained. "These include addressing deficiencies in infrastructure, diagnostics, medicines, and manpower; ensuring full functionality of health facilities, particularly in rural areas; enhancing the quality of care; and promoting expansion and sustainability through telemedicine and IT-enabled services."
She highlighted that nearly 9,000 healthcare facilities have now received quality certification, and approximately 75,000 teleconsultations are conducted daily through Ayushman centres, showcasing the state's commitment to digital health solutions.
Addressing Emerging Health Challenges and Strengthening Collaborations
Dr. Jowel further noted that Uttar Pradesh is proactively preparing to tackle rising health issues such as non-communicable diseases, mental health concerns, geriatric care, and climate-linked illnesses, while simultaneously strengthening trauma care systems.
"The maternal mortality ratio has significantly declined from 216 in 2017 to 141, and further reduction remains a top priority," she stated. "Increased funding and collaboration with around 38 partners, including Unicef, WHO, and UNDP, are instrumental in supporting these ongoing efforts."
Leadership and Partnerships Enhance Programme Implementation
Dr. Zakari Adam, Unicef's Chief for Uttar Pradesh, underscored the importance of strong leadership and effective partnerships in facilitating smoother and more impactful programme implementation.
"When you support individuals who have a clear vision and direction, the work becomes considerably easier," Dr. Adam remarked. "Because leadership and technical teams are aligned, providing technical support and advancing programmes becomes more straightforward and efficient."
AI Integration and Public-Private Partnerships Drive Healthcare Innovation
Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin, a renowned liver transplant surgeon at Medanta in Gurugram, emphasized the growing integral role of artificial intelligence in modern healthcare.
"AI is becoming indispensable in healthcare, aiding in diagnostics, research, documentation, and telemedicine," Dr. Soin said. "Furthermore, public-private partnerships can significantly improve healthcare quality while reducing overall costs, making services more accessible to the population."
Focus on Mental Health and Destigmatization
Dr. Sanjeev Bagai, Chairman of Nephron Clinics, stressed the urgent need to address mental health issues, particularly among children, adolescents, and women.
"It is crucial to remove the stigma associated with seeking psychological help," Dr. Bagai asserted. "Promoting mental well-being and ensuring accessible support systems are vital components of a comprehensive healthcare strategy for Uttar Pradesh."
