In a significant budgetary announcement, the Andhra Pradesh government has earmarked a substantial sum of Rs 19,306 crore for the medical and health sector for the upcoming 2026-27 financial year. This allocation constitutes a notable 5.81% of the state's total annual budget of Rs 3.32 lakh crore, which was formally presented by Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav on Saturday.
Modest Increase in Healthcare Funding Compared to Previous Year
The financial commitment to healthcare this year reflects a relatively modest increase, with the overall allocation rising by Rs 42 crore from last year's proposed budget of Rs 19,264 crore. A detailed breakdown of the Rs 19,306 crore reveals that Rs 16,244 crore is designated for revenue expenditure, covering operational costs and salaries, while Rs 3,061 crore is allocated for capital expenditure, aimed at infrastructure development and long-term investments.
Clearing Inherited Liabilities and Restoring Public Confidence
During the budget presentation, Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav highlighted that the current NDA government inherited substantial liabilities amounting to Rs 6,486 crore from the previous administration in the health sector. Revival of Key Schemes and Infrastructure Development
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav provided further insights into the budgetary priorities, announcing the revival of the Dr NTR baby kit scheme, which had been discontinued during the tenure of the previous YSRCP government.
