MP Human Rights Commission Condemns Bhopal Gas Relief Hospital for Gross Negligence

In a shocking revelation during a surprise inspection, the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission has strongly criticized the Indira Gandhi Women and Children Hospital, Gas Relief, in Bhopal for severe lapses in patient care and infrastructure management. The commission's chairman, Awadhesh Pratap Singh, conducted the unannounced visit on Tuesday, uncovering alarming deficiencies that directly impact healthcare services for victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Critical Absence of Radiologist and Unused Medical Facilities

The inspection highlighted two major failures at the hospital operated by the gas relief and rehabilitation department:

  • No Radiologist Available: The hospital lacks a suitable radiologist, particularly for conducting essential sonography procedures for women patients. This absence compromises diagnostic capabilities and timely medical interventions.
  • Unused Operation Theatre and Oxygen Plant: A modular operation theatre and oxygen plant, constructed in 2023 using public funds, have remained completely unused for three years. This represents a significant waste of resources and denies patients access to critical medical infrastructure.

Commission Chairman's Strong Response and Directives

Awadhesh Pratap Singh expressed profound displeasure at these findings, stating that such mismanagement amounts to a violation of human rights and falls under the category of criminal negligence. He immediately directed the hospital superintendent to submit a detailed report explaining the reasons behind these failures.

The superintendent informed the commission that repairs related to plaster falling from the operation theatre ceiling and termite damage on the walls had not been carried out by the concerned authorities. This maintenance neglect has contributed to the facilities remaining non-functional.

Accountability Measures and Future Actions

The Human Rights Commission has taken a firm stance on ensuring accountability. After receiving the hospital's report, the commission plans to:

  1. Seek explanations from officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) regarding the delayed repairs and maintenance issues.
  2. Take appropriate action based on the findings to prevent such negligence in the future.
  3. Ensure that the hospital's facilities are made operational promptly to serve patients effectively.

This incident underscores systemic failures in healthcare infrastructure management, particularly in institutions serving vulnerable populations affected by historical tragedies. The commission's intervention aims to restore proper medical services and uphold the rights of patients at this crucial facility.
