International Cancer Research Initiative 'Capture' Launched in Coastal Karnataka

An international, research-focused cancer awareness initiative known as the Capture project has been officially launched in Permannur, near Mangaluru. This significant public health effort brings together academic expertise from Europe with local medical institutions in India to combat cancer through enhanced community engagement and early detection strategies.

Project Overview and Objectives

The Capture project, which stands for Cancer Awareness and Screening Promotion Through Utilisation of Community Resources and their Empowerment, is designed to strengthen cancer awareness and improve early detection rates through structured, theory-based community programmes. The initiative represents a collaborative bridge between academic research and practical healthcare implementation, positioning itself as part of the University of Luxembourg's broader international public health research efforts.

Key Collaborators and Leadership

The project is spearheaded by Dr Jyoshma D'Souza, a public health implementation scientist based in Luxembourg, who serves as the principal investigator. In India, the clinical implementation is supported by two co-principal investigators from prominent coastal Karnataka medical institutions:

  • Dr Jyotsna Coelho, a consulting obstetrician and gynaecologist at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, whose work includes research in obstetrics and gynaecological health issues.

This partnership between the University of Luxembourg, KMC Mangaluru, and Father Muller Medical College Hospital aims to leverage local medical expertise while incorporating international research methodologies to create sustainable cancer awareness programmes.

Community Launch and Engagement

The inaugural awareness programme was successfully hosted at St Sebastian Church in Permannur, marking the project's first community engagement effort. The event was organized under the leadership of parish priest Fr Cyprian Pinto, who partnered with the project team to facilitate the initial community camp. This collaboration highlights the project's emphasis on utilizing existing community resources and leadership to maximize outreach and effectiveness.

The Capture project's launch in Mangaluru represents a proactive step toward addressing cancer through a combination of international research, local medical expertise, and community empowerment, with the ultimate goal of reducing cancer mortality through earlier detection and increased public awareness.
