Chennai to Implement AI for Enhanced TB Screening in Public Health
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a groundbreaking initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into its public health services, specifically targeting the detection of tuberculosis and other respiratory illnesses. This move aims to revolutionize diagnostic processes by leveraging AI-based analysis of chest X-rays, thereby significantly speeding up the identification of critical health conditions.
Investment and Infrastructure for AI Integration
With an allocation of 1 crore rupees dedicated to software and equipment, the GCC is set to deploy this advanced technology across its healthcare network. The system will support seven mobile tuberculosis screening units currently operational in the city, as well as X-ray facilities at 15 urban primary health centres (UPHCs) distributed across all 15 zones. This strategic expansion ensures that automated image analysis and faster diagnostic reports become accessible to a broader population, enhancing the efficiency of public health outreach.
Addressing Current Diagnostic Challenges
Currently, the interpretation of chest X-ray images in Chennai's public health facilities relies heavily on manual review by radiologists or trained doctors. This process often faces delays due to high patient volumes, as highlighted by GCC city health officer M Jagadeesan. "The manual review can sometimes slow down reporting, impacting timely diagnosis and treatment," he explained. The introduction of AI software is designed to overcome these bottlenecks by automatically analyzing X-ray images captured through mobile machines and generating diagnostic reports swiftly.
