Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital (RKGMCH) in Hamirpur is preparing to relocate to its permanent campus at Thai village in Nadaun constituency within the next two months. The new facility, built at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 350 crore, marks a significant expansion of healthcare infrastructure in the region.
New Campus Details and Investment
The campus, located on the Hamirpur-Nadaun road, spans nearly 60 acres. The project cost has risen from the originally sanctioned Rs 190 crore to approximately Rs 350 crore. Additional land acquisition is underway to support future expansion, according to Dr (Prof) Ramesh Bharti, Principal of RKGMCH.
Current Operations and Services
Established in 2018, the college currently operates from the Zonal Hospital premises in Hamirpur. It houses around 27 fully functional departments and employs approximately 180 medical experts, including teaching faculty. The hospital records a daily outpatient footfall of 1,200 to 1,500 patients, with 50 to 60 emergency cases handled each day. It maintains nearly 300 beds for indoor patients, with additional capacity arranged during emergencies.
Academic Programs and Student Intake
The institution currently has nearly 500 MBBS students, with an annual intake of 120 students. Recently, DNB postgraduate courses in anaesthesia, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics have been introduced. Dr Bharti stated, “Our aim is to produce competent healthcare professionals who combine expertise with compassion.”
Advanced Medical Equipment
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had announced the introduction of the latest medical equipment. Accordingly, three MRI machines have been installed at the college. These advanced diagnostic systems are expected to significantly improve diagnostic speed and accuracy, playing a crucial role in life-saving treatments. Several other state-of-the-art medical devices have also been procured across various departments.
Future Plans and Expansion
Beyond the medical college and hospital, a nursing and training college has been proposed by the Chief Minister. Dr Bharti envisions the institution becoming a centre of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare delivery. He emphasized, “With collective efforts from faculty members and staff, the institution will soon emerge as a centre of excellence in every sphere of medical education and healthcare.”
Timeline for Relocation
The new campus is almost ready for occupancy. Furniture procurement is in its final stages, building construction is complete, and finishing works are nearly finished. Facilities for outpatient and inpatient services are also ready. The new campus will initially have around 290 beds. Dr Bharti confirmed, “We expect to shift operations within the next two months.”
