Hubballi's Chitaguppi Hospital to Launch Free Dialysis Center in April

The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC)-run Chitaguppi Hospital, developed under the Smart City project, is set to inaugurate a new dialysis center at its facility. All necessary preparations have been finalized, with the center expected to become operational in the first week of April. This initiative aims to provide critical health services to underprivileged patients, supported by generous donors and corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions.

Addressing Healthcare Gaps Through Donor Support

Dr. Sridhar Dandappanavar, the chief medical officer, highlighted the strategic planning behind this development. "A management plan was prepared to ensure that this center continues for a long time," he stated. A local businessman has committed Rs 40 lakh in CSR assistance, while HDMC is providing the essential infrastructure. This collaboration is designed to create a model healthcare center that can attract further donor support.

The hospital previously faced challenges due to limited facilities, but its transformation under the Smart City project has led to significant improvements. "The availability of doctors increased and the number of patients doubled due to the availability of necessary medical treatment facilities," an official noted. The dialysis center will address a pressing need, as many patients currently visit KMC-RI, sometimes missing treatment due to high demand.

Equipment and Operational Details

The medical equipment for the dialysis center, including three dialysis machines, has been secured through donor contributions. Dr. Dandappanavar explained that donors, who had previously provided other medical machines, agreed to donate these after witnessing the hardships faced by dialysis patients. "In this, we proposed a dialysis center to the donors and convinced them. As a result, we will get three machines," he said.

Contract processes for medical staff and center management are nearly complete. The machines are expected to arrive in the first week of March, with officials planning to complete remaining setup work within a month. The goal is to launch services by early April, offering dialysis at no cost to patients. This is particularly impactful given that private hospitals charge around Rs 1,500 per session, with patients often requiring treatment twice a week.

Impact on Patient Care and Community Health

Chitaguppi Hospital serves approximately 2,000 patients monthly with kidney-related issues and has specialist doctors, including a urologist, on staff. The new dialysis center is poised to enhance these services significantly. Dr. Dandappanavar emphasized its benefits, stating that starting the center at Chitaguppi Hospital will be highly advantageous for the community.

This development underscores the hospital's evolution from a facility once marked by apathy to a vibrant healthcare hub. By leveraging Smart City initiatives and donor partnerships, it is set to become a beacon of accessible medical care for the poor in Hubballi.
