Karnataka Government Greenlights Major Hospital Upgrade in Udupi
The Karnataka state government has officially granted administrative approval for a substantial revision in the budget allocated for upgrading and constructing the 250-bed district hospital building in Udupi. This significant development includes the construction of staff quarters and various other critical infrastructure enhancements.
Revised Estimate and Project Details
Prabhakara T, the undersecretary of the department of health and family welfare, confirmed that the government has approved a revised estimate totaling Rs 150.5 crore for this ambitious healthcare project. This marks a notable increase from the initial approval of Rs 115 crore granted on November 13, 2020.
The project's foundation was laid by the then chief minister Basavaraj Bommai on August 12, 2021, near Ajjarakad. Following this, a Hyderabad-based company was awarded the contract, with a formal work order issued on September 8, 2021.
Reasons for Revision and Additional Works
The need for a revised estimate arose due to several additional requirements identified during the project's execution. In a letter dated August 6, 2025, the chief engineer of the health and family welfare department directed the preparation of an updated estimate. This revision includes essential supplementary works such as:
- Shifting the liquid medical oxygen tank to a more optimal location
- Undertaking comprehensive electrical works to meet modern healthcare standards
- Other infrastructure adjustments to enhance functionality and safety
The technical advisory committee conducted a thorough site inspection on April 28, 2025, which led to the formulation of this revised financial plan. Based on the chief engineer's detailed submission, the government granted its formal administrative approval on Wednesday.
Project Scope and Current Progress
This extensive project encompasses the construction of a completely new building for the Udupi district hospital, which is being upgraded from its current capacity of 124 beds to a more robust 250-bed facility. This expansion is expected to significantly improve healthcare access and services in the region.
Health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, while responding to queries from MLA Yashpal Suvarna, provided an encouraging update on the project's progress. He stated that approximately 90% of the civil works for the new hospital building have already been successfully completed, indicating that the project is advancing steadily toward its final stages.
The approval of this revised estimate represents a crucial step forward in enhancing Udupi's healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that the district hospital will be equipped to meet growing medical demands with modern facilities and expanded capacity.
