Kerala Chief Minister to Launch Major Hospital Expansion Project in Thiruvananthapuram
In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in the state capital, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is scheduled to inaugurate the construction of a new multi-storey hospital block at General Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. This ambitious project, implemented through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), is estimated to cost Rs 137 crore and aims to transform the hospital's appearance and capacity.
Addressing Long-Standing Space Constraints
According to Health Minister Veena George, the project will help address the long-standing space constraints faced by General Hospital, which is located in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram and caters to thousands of patients daily. The new facility is designed to significantly enhance medical services and patient care in the region.
Modern Four-Storey Building with Advanced Facilities
The proposed structure will be a modern four-storey building equipped with advanced medical facilities. The ground floor will house a reception area, trauma care unit, general outpatient department (OPD), antiretroviral therapy (ARV) clinic, and a pharmacy. This layout ensures easy access to essential services for patients arriving at the hospital.
Comprehensive Medical Services Across Floors
First Floor: This level will accommodate intensive care units for various departments, along with a seminar hall, e-health services, and Bhoomika clinic. The inclusion of e-health services highlights a move towards digital healthcare integration.
Second Floor: Features will include a spacious laboratory complex, a blood bank, and specialty and super-specialty outpatient departments, providing specialized diagnostic and treatment options.
Top Floor: Facilities such as a chemotherapy ward, operation theatre complex, and dental outpatient department will be set up, catering to critical and specialized medical needs.
Support Infrastructure and Accessibility
In addition to the medical facilities, the building will include a dedicated service block with an air-conditioning plant, medical gas unit, and laundry facilities to support hospital operations. To ensure easy movement for patients, staff, and visitors, the building complex will be equipped with 10 elevators, enhancing accessibility and efficiency within the hospital.
This infrastructure upgrade represents a major step forward in improving healthcare delivery in Thiruvananthapuram, with the KIIFB-funded project set to modernize General Hospital and better serve the community's medical requirements.
