The superintendent of Konni Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kottayam, Kerala, has issued a formal memo to surgeon Dr. Shivaprasad for posting a public notice that highlighted alleged deficiencies in treatment facilities at the hospital. This action has ignited a significant controversy regarding hospital protocols and staff authority within the medical institution.

Hospital Superintendent Defends Operations and Criticizes Unauthorized Notice

Dr. Shaji, the superintendent of Konni MCH, strongly defended the hospital's operational capabilities in response to the notice. He emphasized that over 2,000 surgeries have been successfully conducted at the facility in recent years, underscoring its track record of medical service. Dr. Shaji stated that no surgeon in any medical college across Kerala possesses the authority to post such notices without explicit permission from the medical college authorities.

"If there were genuine inadequacies, the proper procedure is to inform the relevant authorities first," Dr. Shaji asserted. "Both the medical ICU and theatre ICU are fully operational, and we have sufficient staff to manage patient care effectively. The superintendent and principal were completely unaware of this notice until it was publicly displayed."

Surgeon's Notice and Subsequent Refusal to Accept Memo

Earlier, Dr. Shivaprasad had posted a notice on the door of the out-patient (OP) room, declaring that the hospital lacks adequate treatment facilities and that he would not assume responsibility for any incidents occurring during surgeries. This move prompted the hospital administration to issue a memo seeking an explanation from the surgeon.

However, Dr. Shivaprasad refused to accept the memo when it was presented to him. As a result, the district medical officer intervened, instructing the MCH superintendent to send the memo via official mail to ensure proper documentation and communication.

Hospital Administration Counters Allegations with Detailed Rebuttal

In a detailed rebuttal, Dr. Shaji addressed the specific claims made in the notice. He highlighted that the surgeon's department alone employs over 10 staff members, ensuring robust support for medical procedures. Regarding infrastructure concerns, Dr. Shaji confirmed that issues such as peeling paint are being comprehensively addressed through ongoing maintenance efforts.

Furthermore, he noted that pharmacy services are available around the clock, 24/7, and the hospital is equipped with three fully functional intensive care units, all of which are adequately staffed and operational. These points were presented to counter the surgeon's assertions of facility shortcomings.

Voluntary Retirement Application and Escalation to Higher Authorities

Following the incident, Dr. Shivaprasad applied for voluntary retirement from his position at the hospital. The superintendent has forwarded a detailed report on the matter to the director of medical education for further review and appropriate action. This step marks an escalation in the administrative handling of the dispute, potentially impacting future staffing and operational decisions at Konni MCH.
