Kerala's Rs 286.66 Crore Super Specialty Medical Block Inaugurated in Kochi

The super specialty block of Ernakulam Medical College in Kalamassery, Kochi, was officially inaugurated at 5 PM on Tuesday. This state-of-the-art facility, constructed as part of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board's development initiatives, represents a significant investment of Rs 286.66 crore aimed at enhancing healthcare services in the region.

Comprehensive Medical Departments and Advanced Facilities

The new block is designed to house a wide array of specialized departments, addressing critical healthcare gaps. Key departments include neurosurgery, gynaecology, gastroenterology, cardiothoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, urology, nephrology, transplant services, dialysis units, and critical care services. Additionally, the facility features a radiodiagnosis department, pathology-microbiology-biochemistry laboratories, and dedicated dialysis units.

To support these medical functions, the block is equipped with modern amenities such as 18 lifts, parking for 715 cars, an RO plant, and robust water supply facilities. The hospital now boasts 16 operation theatres and 842 beds, along with advanced equipment for neonatology, sophisticated labour rooms, and scanning and X-ray units.

Addressing Healthcare Shortages and Expanding Services

The construction of this block was driven by the urgent need to address insufficient facilities for emergency treatments, particularly in neurosurgery, which has been a critical concern due to the high incidence of vehicle accidents in the area. The new infrastructure aims to mitigate these shortcomings by providing enhanced emergency care capabilities.

In a move to bolster medical staffing, the government has created 90 new positions within the medical college, with a focus on cardiovascular specialties. Furthermore, arrangements have been made for additional departments, including cosmetology and virology, broadening the scope of healthcare services offered.

This development underscores Kerala's commitment to upgrading its healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that residents have access to comprehensive and advanced medical treatments in a modern, well-equipped environment.
