KGMU Lucknow to Revolutionize Trauma Care with Bedside Imaging Services

In a significant advancement for emergency medical services, King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is poised to introduce bedside CT scan and X-ray facilities at its trauma centre. This innovative project, scheduled for completion by July, involves the installation of portable CT and X-ray machines in the casualty wing, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 8 crore. The initiative is designed to enhance care for critically ill patients, particularly accident victims, by streamlining diagnostic processes and minimizing delays.

Addressing Critical Delays in Emergency Diagnostics

Currently, patients at the KGMU trauma centre must be transported from the emergency department to the radiology gallery for imaging procedures. This movement not only consumes valuable time but also increases the risk of complications during transit. With the introduction of portable machines, scans will be conducted directly at the bedside, eliminating the need for patient relocation and expediting diagnosis. This change is expected to benefit nearly 150 patients daily, offering a more efficient and safer approach to trauma care.

Focus on Accident Victims and Critically Ill Patients

The new bedside imaging services will primarily serve accident victims, individuals with head injuries, and patients requiring ventilator support. According to Prof Prem Raj Singh, Chief Medical Superintendent of the trauma centre, "In trauma care, every minute is critical. Bedside CT and X-ray will facilitate faster decision-making and enable earlier treatment interventions." He emphasized that portable CT machines utilize the same advanced technology as conventional scanners but are mobile, providing high-quality images while maintaining strict radiation safety standards through controlled doses and shielding systems.

Ensuring Safety and Quality in Portable Imaging

Medical professionals at KGMU have assured that radiation exposure from the portable devices is kept to a minimum through regulated doses and adherence to standard safety protocols. Portable X-ray machines, in particular, employ lower and more targeted radiation doses, further enhancing patient safety. Prof Singh highlighted that these measures ensure the delivery of precise diagnostic images without compromising on health standards.

Expansion of ICU Capacity and Overall Impact

In addition to the imaging upgrades, KGMU plans to increase the number of ICU beds in its trauma emergency unit. The bed count on the third floor will rise from eight to 28, bolstering the facility's capacity to handle critical cases. Vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand remarked that these enhancements are aimed at reducing diagnostic delays, lowering transfer risks, and strengthening the overall framework of trauma care at the university.

Once operational, the bedside CT and X-ray services are anticipated to significantly improve emergency response times and survival rates for patients in critical condition. This project underscores KGMU's commitment to advancing medical technology and patient care in Uttar Pradesh, setting a new benchmark for trauma management in the region.
