Maharashtra Government Sanctions Rs 55 Crore for Advanced Medical Equipment in Nagpur Hospitals

The Maharashtra state government has recently granted administrative approval for a substantial investment of nearly Rs 55 crore to procure advanced medical equipment at key healthcare institutions in Nagpur. This initiative targets the expansion of super speciality services at both Government Medical Colleges and Hospitals and the Government Dental College, with the primary goal of enabling faster and higher-quality treatment for critically ill patients across the region.

Major Funding for Interventional Radiology and Specialized Treatments

Under the state plan for 2025-26, the Maharashtra medical education and drugs department has approved approximately Rs 38 crore to establish an interventional radiology department at the Super Speciality Hospital in Nagpur. A significant portion of this allocation, Rs 32 crore, will be dedicated to acquiring a digital subtraction angiography system. This advanced technology facilitates precise imaging of blood vessels, allowing for early detection and effective treatment of blockages, aneurysms, and bleeding in critical organs such as the brain and heart.

The system will be equipped with intravascular ultrasound for accurate stent placement and a rotational atherectomy system to remove calcified blockages. Additionally, it includes an anaesthesia workstation and an ultrasonography machine, which collectively support minimally invasive procedures, thereby reducing patient risk and improving recovery times.

Additional Allocations for Enhanced Healthcare Services

Further funding has been allocated to address specific medical needs:

  • Rs 6 crore for a vacuum-based therapy system designed to treat large and non-healing wounds.
  • Rs 6 crore for the paediatrics department to enhance child healthcare services.
  • Rs 75 lakh for an automated blood component separation unit, specifically benefiting sickle cell patients.
  • Rs 4.33 crore to upgrade the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Government Medical College and Hospital.

For the Government Dental College and Hospital in Nagpur, a sanction of Rs 3.53 crore has been approved for the procurement of 86 pieces of equipment, aimed at modernizing dental care facilities. Additionally, the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital will receive Rs 4.33 crore to strengthen its ICU and casualty departments, ensuring better emergency response capabilities.

Expert Recommendations for Effective Implementation

Healthcare experts have emphasized that while funding is a critical step, strict monitoring of equipment quality, pricing, and utilization is essential. They advocate for a transparent procurement process to ensure that the investments lead to tangible improvements in healthcare delivery. This oversight will help maximize the benefits of the advanced equipment, ultimately contributing to enhanced patient outcomes and more efficient medical services in Nagpur.
