Maharashtra Government Announces New Public Health Institute in Nagpur
The Maharashtra state government made a significant announcement on Friday, revealing plans to establish a Maharashtra Public Health Institution in Nagpur. This initiative is poised to substantially strengthen public health training, research, and policy planning across the region, marking a pivotal step in enhancing healthcare infrastructure.
Institutional Framework and Collaboration
The new institute will be developed following the model of premier national institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM). In a collaborative effort, the Public Health Foundation of India will partner with the state government to set up the institute. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled this key highlight during the presentation of the Maharashtra Budget 2026 on Friday.
The proposed institute is expected to introduce a new dimension to Nagpur's rapidly expanding healthcare ecosystem, with a dedicated focus on epidemiology, disease surveillance, public health research, and the training of health professionals. Experts anticipate that it will also play a crucial role in bolstering health policy support for Maharashtra and central India.
Nagpur's Expanding Healthcare Landscape
Nagpur's public healthcare sector has undergone major expansion in recent years, with several large-scale projects already operational or in development. The establishment of AIIMS Nagpur has significantly enhanced tertiary healthcare services, bringing advanced treatment and research facilities to the area. Concurrently, the ongoing revamp and expansion of Nagpur's Government Medical College and Hospital have improved treatment capacity at one of the largest public hospitals serving the Vidarbha region.
Further expansion is on the horizon with the planned mega Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in North Nagpur. This project aims to improve healthcare access for densely populated areas that have long faced a shortage of advanced public health facilities. Additionally, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) is constructing a 300-bed hospital in East Nagpur to cater to the rapidly growing population in that part of the city.
Together with the proposed public health institute, these projects are expected to significantly strengthen Nagpur's healthcare infrastructure, positioning the city as a major center for medical education, research, and public health planning in central India.
Budget Highlights and Healthcare Coverage Expansion
The state budget also emphasized the expansion of healthcare coverage under government insurance schemes. The number of treatments covered under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana has increased from 1,356 to 2,399 procedures. Moreover, the number of empanelled hospitals has risen from 1,792 to 4,537.
In a move to further enhance access to advanced treatment, the government approved financial assistance of up to ₹22 lakh for nine types of organ transplants. This measure is designed to strengthen healthcare support for patients across the state, ensuring broader and more comprehensive medical care.
