Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University Hosts 38th Convocation Ceremony

In a grand ceremony held in Chennai, Governor R N Ravi presided over the 38th convocation of Tamil Nadu MGR Medical University on Friday, conferring degrees upon an impressive total of 49,864 students. Notably, 65% of the graduates were women, highlighting a significant stride towards gender inclusivity in the medical field. The event saw the absence of Health Minister Ma Subramanian, who serves as the pro-chancellor of the university.

In-Person Honors and Top Achievers

Among the graduates, at least 295 students, including 58 PhD candidates, received their convocation in person. The standout performer of the year was S Shwetha, who secured nine gold medals during her MBBS degree. She earned accolades for achieving the highest marks in key subjects such as microbiology, pharmacology, obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as in overall university examinations. Reflecting on her success, Shwetha stated, "I am pursuing my post-graduation in JIPMER. I look to contribute meaningfully to society."

Breakdown of Degree Programs

The convocation celebrated a diverse range of medical disciplines. The degrees conferred included 12,016 in MBBS, 3,269 in AYUSH, 2,569 in dental studies, and 32,305 in nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and allied health sciences. This distribution underscores the university's comprehensive approach to healthcare education.

Inspirational Address and Awards Distribution

Delivering the convocation address, R K Dhiman, director of the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, emphasized the importance of continuous learning. He advised the students, "Among several things, you must learn the art of lifelong learning. Technology has grown miles. You must constantly stay updated and complement it with your skill to remain at the top of your field."

A total of 353 medals and certificates were distributed during the event, comprising 144 gold and 42 silver medals. Among the gold medallists was Grizelda P, who has a cochlear implant from the Madras ENT Research Foundation. Dr Mohan Kameshwaran, founder and senior ENT surgeon at MERF, expressed pride, saying, "It was a proud moment to see our patient receive a gold medal from the governor this morning. She received a Cochlear Implant in 2007."

The convocation not only honored academic excellence but also inspired future contributions to healthcare, reinforcing the university's commitment to producing skilled medical professionals.
