Mizoram's Zoram Medical College Achieves First Laparoscopic Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

In a landmark achievement for advanced healthcare in Mizoram, the Zoram Medical College & Hospital (ZMC&H) located in Falkawn near Aizawl has successfully conducted the state's first-ever laparoscopic surgery for pancreatic cancer. This historic procedure, carried out on Tuesday, represents a significant advancement in specialized surgical care within the region, potentially reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside Mizoram for complex conditions.

Workshop and Collaborative Effort

The groundbreaking surgery was performed during a gastroenterology academic session and surgical workshop, jointly organized by the department of surgery at ZMC&H and the Association of Surgeons of Mizoram. This program brought together leading surgeons and gastroenterology specialists from across the country, fostering an environment of expertise exchange and capacity building in advanced minimally invasive techniques.

As part of the workshop, the pancreatic cancer surgery utilized laparoscopic, or keyhole, methods—marking the first time such a complex operation has been undertaken in Mizoram through this approach. Laparoscopic surgery offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery, including smaller incisions, minimized blood loss, and faster recovery times for patients.

Expert Involvement and Training

Specialist surgeons from outside the state played a crucial role in the program, leading the operation and collaborating closely with the local surgical team at ZMC&H. Their participation facilitated hands-on training and knowledge transfer, empowering doctors in Mizoram with new skills in advanced surgical procedures. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the state's medical infrastructure and pave the way for more minimally invasive surgeries in the future.

Additional Healthcare Initiatives

Beyond the landmark surgery, the workshop also included Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures, which were provided free of cost to eight patients. These interventions were conducted in partnership with Dr. Benjamine Khiangte, a Medical Gastroenterologist from the Gastro & Liver Clinic, offering patients access to highly specialized diagnostic and interventional care that is typically limited to major metropolitan centers.

Hospital sources have hailed this development as a breakthrough for tertiary healthcare services in Mizoram. The successful execution of such a technically demanding surgery within the state is anticipated to enhance local medical capabilities and improve patient outcomes, contributing to the growing healthcare landscape in the region.
