Mumbai's Major Civic Hospitals to Receive MRI Facilities Within Six Months
The Maharashtra state government has announced a significant upgrade to healthcare infrastructure in Mumbai, with four major civic-run hospitals set to receive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) facilities within the next five to six months. This development addresses a critical and long-pending gap in advanced diagnostic services for patients in the city.
Addressing a Persistent Healthcare Gap
The issue was brought to light through a calling attention motion in the legislative council by BJP MLC Rajhans Singh. He highlighted the absence of MRI machines at key Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals, including BYL Nair Hospital, KEM Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (commonly known as Sion Hospital), and Cooper Hospital.
Singh pointed out that despite lakhs of patients seeking treatment annually at these facilities and thousands of crores being allocated to healthcare, the lack of MRI services has persisted for years. This deficiency has forced countless patients to seek expensive diagnostic tests at private centers, adding financial strain to already burdened individuals and families.
Government Response and Procurement Process
Responding to the debate, Industries Minister Uday Samant provided detailed information on the government's plan. He stated that the BMC had already initiated the procurement process by floating tenders in September 2025 to acquire four MRI machines—one for each of the identified hospitals.
"The machines are expected to be installed and made operational in the next five to six months," Samant confirmed, indicating that the tender process is currently underway. This timeline suggests that patients could start benefiting from these advanced diagnostic services by mid-2026, marking a substantial improvement in public healthcare accessibility.
