Visakhapatnam: A new intrauterine insemination (IUI) laboratory has been inaugurated at King George Hospital (KGH) and Andhra Medical College (AMC) in Visakhapatnam, aiming to improve fertility rates in the region. Officials announced that the IUI facility will offer free infertility treatment services to poor and middle-class couples struggling to conceive.
Global and Local Impact of Infertility
According to health officials, infertility affects one in six people worldwide, while approximately 27.5 million individuals in India are estimated to be dealing with the issue. In Visakhapatnam specifically, about 15 to 18 percent of couples are affected by infertility.
How IUI Works
The IUI procedure involves collecting healthy sperm from the male partner, processing it through a specialized method, and placing it in the woman's uterus during ovulation to enhance the chances of pregnancy. Officials emphasized that the procedure is safe and serves as a vital treatment option for infertility.
Support from Alumni Association
The Andhra Medical College Old Students Association (AMCOSA) donated the necessary equipment and infrastructure to establish the laboratory as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Regulatory Approvals
All required approvals for operating the laboratory were obtained from the district medical and health department. The facility was also cleared by the district-level PCPNDT committee with the approval of the district collector.
Inauguration Ceremony
The inauguration was attended by District Collector Abhishikt Kishore, Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsi Krishna Srinivas, and officials from KGH and AMC.
