The National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted approval for an increase of 50 MBBS seats at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Srinagar, an official announced. This expansion will raise the total annual intake from 200 to 250 seats, effective from the upcoming academic year 2026-27.
Approval Process and Regulatory Framework
The Health and Medical Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir confirmed that the NMC's Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) issued the Letter of Permission (LoP) under Section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019. The decision followed a rigorous evaluation by MARB in accordance with the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023.
An official spokesperson stated that the increase aims to strengthen medical education and healthcare delivery in the region. Last year, GMC Srinagar had already received approval for an additional 20 seats, marking a steady expansion of its capacity.
Impact on Medical Education in Jammu and Kashmir
With the new seats, GMC Srinagar will have a total of 250 MBBS seats, reinforcing its status as a premier medical college in the country. The spokesperson highlighted that this development underscores the institution's commitment to producing more qualified doctors to serve the healthcare needs of Jammu and Kashmir.
The NMC's approval reflects a broader effort to enhance medical education infrastructure in the region, addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals. The additional seats are expected to benefit students from the state and improve access to medical training.
Previous Expansions and Future Outlook
The latest increase follows a pattern of gradual expansion at GMC Srinagar. Last year's addition of 20 seats brought the total to 200, and the new 50-seat boost represents a 25% increase in capacity. The college continues to invest in facilities and faculty to accommodate the growing student body.
The Health and Medical Education Department expressed optimism that the expansion will enhance the quality of medical education and contribute to better health outcomes in the region. The implementation of UGMSR, 2023 standards ensures that the training meets national benchmarks.
